Another Serving of Asparagus!

The Chicago Design Archive will include the Asparagus logo designed by Richard Zeid, ADD'04.

In October 2002 The Society of Typographic Arts celebrated its seventy-fifth anniversary with three exhibitions: "Fifty Years of Graphic Design in Chicago 1927-1977", "Fifty Years of Chicago Graphic Design (1941-1991)", and "Seventy-five Years of Graphic Design in Chicago." The 800-plus images that form the nucleus of the Chicago Design Archive preserve the historical survey of graphic design examples curated for those exhibitions.

The STA updates this Archive annually with new material from Chicago designers through its Archive Show, the annual competition developed to recognize outstanding achievement in Chicago graphic design.

American Graphic Design Award given to Richard Zeid, ADD Class of '04, for logo design

Asparagus' logo, designed by Richard Zeid Design, received an American Graphic Design Award given by Graphic Design:USA.

After more than three decades of holding this competition, a remarkable 10,000+ media diverse entries nationwide were submitted this year. The chosen pieces, and their creators, represent the best and brightest in graphic design today.

Asparagus is a newly opened restaurant in Northwest Indiana serving a blend of dishes from Viet Nam, Thailand, France, and the Americas. The name refers to the vegetable’s role in each of the cuisines featured on the restaurant’s uniquely blended menu.

About the design: Creating a formal mark using the asparagus was the centerpiece of the logo. Finding a complimentary and
modern type treatment was key in expressing the blend of classic and modern seen throughout the restaurant and even the menu.

LogoLounge Volume 4 will include logo designed by Richard Zeid Design, ADD Class of '04.

Richard Zeid's logo designed for Regit, Inc., an insurance provider for individuals, entrepreneurs and real estate professionals, will be included in the fourth volume in the best-selling LogoLounge series. LogoLounge 4 will include over 2,000 totally new logos from designers worldwide.

The work submitted was chosen by an international panel of judges including: Louis Lygo of Wolff Olins, Jerry Kuyper of Jerry Kuyper Partners, Jason Schulte of Jason Schulte Design, Gaby de Abreu of Switch Branding & Design, Haley Johnson of Haley Johnson Design, Neville Brody of Research Studios, Janet Martin of Communication Arts, Inc., and Chris Campbell of Interbrand.

Each LogoLounge book presents thousands of new logos that have been added to the site, providing designers with a timely and invaluable source for design inspiration and a resource for design solutions.

Congrats to Julia Winfield-Pfefferkorn, ADD '04

Another logo from the Advertising Design Class of '04 has been chosen for the Big Book of Logos 5.

Congratulations to Julia Winfield-Pfefferkorn whose Vesta Films Logo (above) was selected for the book. The Big Book of Logos, by David E. Carter, showcases the best work of more than 500 design firms, advertising agencies, and freelancers in the United States.

Julia used the Chinese character for “dream” to depict the screenwriter and director’s aspirations of developing a film company that will be successful in the Chinese market(s).

Vesta Films is an independent film company in Palm Beach, Florida that specializes in writing, researching and producing films in China.

Congratulations to Roby McEuen, ADD '06

Silver Medal Award Goes to Roby McEuen

The Advertising Club of Fort Worth recently announced the selection of Roby McEuen as this year's recipient of the American Advertising Federation's Silver Medal Award.

The Silver Medal Award is the American Advertising Federation's highest honor given at the local level. Criteria for selection includes contributions to his/her company, creative ability, contributions to the general advancement of advertising and contributions to the community.

The award will be presented to Roby on Wednesday, March 21, 2007.

Richard Zeid, ADD '04, has logo published in upcoming book

Earth First Farms logo, designed by Richard Zeid Design, picked for inclusion in the Big Book of Logos 5.

Earth First Farms is an organic apple orchard growing seven varieties of apples on 45 acres of rolling land in southwest Michigan.

The apple was a natural choice for use in the logo, but rather than using a picture perfect apple that corporate growers typically use, an organic “less than perfect” one was created and paired up with traditional typography.

This annually best-selling book showcases effective logo design from around the world. the variety of styles and techniques on display cover the complete creative spectrum and provides endless inspiration for graphic designers in the critical ‘idea-generating’ phase.

You must have been a beautiful baby!

Kenneth Laird, ILL '02 joined thirteen other ISDP Illustration alumni, as well as a gaggle of ISDP visiting faculty, in the Society of Illustrator's You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby Show which ran September 6 - October 14. The painting above shows Kenneth in 1972 at the age of three. The exhibition was a veritable "family album" of contemporary American illustrators. Ninety artists created self-portraits depicting themselves at some point between their birth and puberty. Kenneth said " The show was great and it was a thrill to be showing with such giants in the industry many of whom taught me at Syracuse" For a list of the artists and to view some of the other portraits, click here.

Kenneth recently moved to High Point North Carolina and took a Senior Art Directors position with Digital HighPoint, a digital printing and Point of Purchase design firm. He also built a new home in the country across the street from a beautiful fishing lake. Kenneth says "Life is swell."

Visiting Faculty Spotlight - Craig Yoe

Better known as C.E.YOE, Craig's done it all. Early in his career, he was Senior Designer for toy think tank Marvin Glass & Associates, where he worked on toys like Cabbage Patch Kids and My Little Pony (he also liked to play with My Little Pony, but that's another story). He was recruited by Jim Henson to be Creative Director and later VP/General Manager of the Muppets, working on everything from TV shows to theme parks. After Henson's death, Craig declined a lucrative job offer from Disney to make his own magic with Clizia Gussoni and YOE! Studio

Advertising Design students in Craig Yoe's interactive sessions on creativity and brainstorming techniques had fun creating their toys to share with Craig, their class, and possibly the rest of the world!

Visiting Faculty Spotlight - CF Payne

Students in the Illustration classes of 2006 and 2007 enjoyed instruction with CF Payne during this summer's residency.

CF Payne is a freelance illustrator and has an impressive client list, including Time, Rolling Stone, Sports Illustrated, Esquire, GQ, National Geographic, Spy, NFL, U.S. Postal Service, and others.

His awards include gold and silver medals, as well as the Gold Funny Bone from the New York Society of Illustrators, Society of Illustrators Los Angeles, Communication Arts, and Print Magazine.

Craig Welsh ADD '04 Urban Forest

This banner for the AIGA Urban Forest Project, designed by Craig Welsh, ADD '04 of GoWelsh, was chosen to hang in Times Square this summer.

The Urban Forest will officially sprout on August 17 in Times Square and be on display thru October 31, 2006. The website for the project will also launch on that day.

A brochure will be available that will feature all of the banners and will show roughly in Times Square where they are located.

At the end of October the banners will be taken down and turned into tote-bags. The bags are going to be designed and manufactured by Jack Spade. This will take about three months. Once the bags have been produced there will be an auction to raise money for scholarship and mentoring programs in February or March.

The Power of 10

The Syracuse University Art Galleries will display the first exhibition of graduate student thesis work from the ISDP in Advertising Design. The show, "The Power of Ten", will run from Monday, July 31 through Thursday, August 10. Representative of their graduating class size, the show demonstrates ten original thesis displays with a common problem-solving strategy to inform, educate and entertain their audience.

"A visual thesis component is essential in a visual discipline," explains Professor John Milligan, who spearheaded this new graphic component of the thesis requirement for ISDP Advertising Design master candidates.

Based in remote locations as far as Vancouver and as close as Pennsylvania, the ISDP Ad Design class of 2006 embraced the new element with vigor and tenacity. "Showcasing as a unified group with a wide range of topics, 'The Power of Ten' is going to be a great showing of design, advertising and marketing on many levels. I give it a 10," says class president Jennifer Haas Foy. Thesis topics range from "Dogs in Advertising" and "Wine Label Design" to "Creating Environments that Inspire Creatives" and "Contemporary Letterpress Design."
On Thursday, August 10 at 7:30 PM, there will be a closing reception for the ISDP Advertising Design and Illustration exhibitions running concurrently.

The Syracuse University Art Galleries are located in the Shaffer Art Building and is universally accessible. Exhibitions are free and open to the public weekdays from noon-5 p.m. For more information, call (315) 443-3127.

Professor John Thompson Garners Top Illustration Award

John Thompson, professor of illustration in the
School of Art and Design at the College of Visual
and Performing Arts, was recently honored
with the 2006 Hamilton King Award for the best
illustration of the year, as presented by the Society of Illustrators.
The Hamilton King Award is the highest achievement
an illustrator can receive in any year.

Each year, the Society of Illustrators recognizes the top
achievements within the field of illustration, encompassing
all genres, every medium and every range of practitioner,
from students all the way up to lifetime members.
The Society of Illustrators sponsors the Annual Exhibition
of American Illustration, a juried show with more than 5,000 entries. This year, more than 500 pieces were selected for the show from 240 artists, and two of Thompson's pieces were selected. The judges then determine the gold and silver medal winners, and one piece from the entire show is selected as the best illustration by a member of the Society -- The Hamilton King Award.

written by Newberry Award-winning author Nancy Willard.
"The Flying Bed" -- to be published in spring 2007
by Scholastic Blue Sky Press -- is set in Florence, Italy.

Society of Illustrators 48 Show

and his Live to Draw piece was used for a gallery show poster
for art by Pittsburgh area educators.
The Live to Draw piece was also in the latest
Communication Arts magazine, Illustration annual.

San Francisco

The ISDP Illustration classes of 2006 and 2007 are enjoying a fine time in San Francisco this week.
Day one brought the group to Palo Alto to view the extensive art collection of Ben and Jane Eisenstat. Jane and her daughter, Bunny Carter graciously welcomed us to Jane's home for the day. Jane is an illustrator and art historian. Bunny is an award winning illustrator and teaches regularly in the ISDP.

Joe Knezic, ADD '06, Nets Four Awards

Joe Knezic was recently recognized by
Graphic Design USA with four 2005 American Graphic Design Awards.

Sample images of the winning entries were included in the magazine’s awards annual issue in December. The winning entries included two awards for United Way of the Capital Region (a print advertising campaign and outdoor campaign); a press kit folder for Three Mile Island Alert, a nuclear watchdog organization; and a holiday newspaper campaign for an urban retail center Joe worked on with PPO&S, an agency in Harrisburg.

The award is part of an annual program presented by Graphic Design: USA, one of the most highly respected publications for the creative industry. Winning entries are lauded “for excellence in communication and graphic design” and are representative of the country’s leading, most innovative creative efforts. The awards program is also one of the most selective of awards shows, recognizing only 1 in 10 sumitted entries. The entries were judged by a panel of 6 leading professionals from throughout the country.

Don Kilpatrick, ILL '06

What's the buzz about Don Kilpatrick?

It's not just ISDP school work that's keeping him busy.

Last November Don was featured in a two page spread in the Communication Arts 2005 Design Annual. The article highlighted his work, influences, and philosophy. You can read it here.

This piece, Loving, was accepted into the New York Society of Illustrator's show.

Don was recently elected as the new president of the San Francisco Society of Illustrators and has several pieces in the La Luz de Jesus Gallery's annual group show in Los Angeles.

Ad Design Class of 2007

The Advertising Design Class of 2007 recently traveled to
Austin, TX for their 2nd contact period since beginning the program.

They had two days of presentations and two days of visiting agencies and chatting with the "greats" in the Austin area.
T3 The Think Tank, Luke Sullivan at GSD&M, Design Edge, and Sibley Peteet Design were a few. They also managed to find time for a little sightseeing, two step dancing, and visiting the University of Texas campus.

'Segun Olude, ADD '02, helps S.O.S put the Seine River on the map, literally.

David Danyluk, Coordinator of Save Our Seine River Environment Inc. (SOS), Segun Olude of Indigo Ink Studios & Denis Savoie, the artist, collaborated on the recently published Seine River Greenway Map.

This innovative map displays, for the first time, all 27 kilometers of the Seine River within the City of Winnipeg, Canada.

The map is an effective way to bring nature to citizens and raise awareness about their local environment. It is a detailed, functional illustrated map, based on the beautiful watercolour rendering of the Seine through Winnipeg, to the Red River in old Saint Boniface.

The map is offered in two styles; a folded map for field use and a poster version for display in classrooms or offices. Both styles are now on sale at McNally Robinson, Chapters/Indigo, Prairie Sky Books, Preferred Perch, St. Boniface tourism, and through the SOS website.

Paul Diamond ADD '04

Fresh – This milk is so fresh. There’s a good chance that you passed the cow on your way to the store.

This comforting package design for Shatto Milk, a family-owned and -operated dairy farm near Kansas City, MO, was featured in the 2005 Communication Arts Design Annual. Half-gallon glass bottles feature five product benefits – “icy cold, family, pure, fresh and yummy.” The glass bottle packaging evokes a simpler time while giving the brand a premium look that helps it standout on the product shelf.

The design was handcrafted by Paul Diamond, Sullivan, Higdon and Sink senior art director, who said, “The design speaks to the consumer who is craving authenticity.”

Diamond created a new logo for the farm to enhance the 50s bottle shape and to revive the nostalgic feel of milk-delivered-to-your-door-days. “Beyond the satisfaction of being recognized for great work by such a prestigious publication, it’s especially satisfying that we’re helping a genuine family farm not only stay in business but thrive,” said Diamond.
