Katrina Photograph in London Gallery Exhibit

This photo was taken by Gayle Nelson, ILL 2004, and was chosen for display recently in the AOP Gallery in London.





The exhibit, Sublime: Representations of Awe in Contemporary Imagery, was inspired by recent imagery of the forces of nature and scenes of war. From over 700 images submitted, 60 were chosen for display.

Gayle writes " After watching television accounts of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation, I felt compelled to go down to the coast and try and help in some way. We located an organized group with supplies and a police escort. On Sunday, September 11, 2005 we made the trip to Pascagoula, Mississippi . What I had seen on the news in recent days, hardly prepared me for the human misery and total devastation I encountered. You can view photos and recollections from this one-day journey here.

Hawaii International Conference

Congratulations to Craig Welsh, Richard Zeid, and Mark Rosenthal, graduates from the Advertising Design Class of 2004.

All three recently presented their theses at the Hawaii International Conference on Education in Honolulu.

Mark presented his thesis; Professors of Practice: Teaching Advertising Creativity in the Academic Community. Craig presented his thesis; Tethering the Viewer: Product Placement in Television and Film, and Richard presented his thesis; Money: The Branding of a Country Through the Design of its Currency.

Kudos also to Dave Grager '04, Julia Winfield '05, and James Torio '05. These ISDP graduates also had their papers accepted but were unable to attend.

John Milligan attends design conference in China

Exit to the Forbidden City, Beijing, China

John Milligan, ISDP Ad Design Faculty went to Beijing, China in December, 2005 and attended the Design for the New China Markets Conference

The conference was an executive forum hosted by the IIT Institute of Design and the State Intellectual Property Office, People's Republic of China. It was intended for leaders interested in the design and development of products and services for China.

Participation was by invitation only.

Speakers came from both the East and the West, providing a diverse set of perspectives on the issues facing design and innovation in China today. Critical information for designers working in the global marketplace.

John said "Best conference I have ever attended. Better than Aspen."

John Thompson travels to India

In November John Thompson, Illustration faculty returned from a trip to India for Syracuse University. "We are trying to start a program abroad there combining South Asian Studies with Art. Professor Susan Wadley, an Anthropologist, and I traveled through North Central India for three weeks exploring the potential for bringing students over as early as January 2007. We landed in New Delhi, and traveled to Nawalgarh and Jaipur, Rajasthan, Agra, and eventually ended up at a very small village in Utter Pradesh called Karimgunj. Professor Wadley has been studying this village for over 30 years. There I got to experience a part of India that I would have never seen as a tourist."




"As an illustrator, I naturally felt that that to get this program started, I needed to demonstrate the visual possibilities of studying in India. Several paintings are now in progress and in October there is an exhibition scheduled in the Dean’s Gallery in Crouse College. My goal is to paint at least 10 fairly large-scale paintings for this show. We will then begin recruiting students to accompany me on my return to India."

John said the initial 3-credit course proposal will begin as a two-week research trip to New Delhi and travel through Rajasthan and Agra. Students will then continue the course back on campus where the students will complete the body of work based on their research. Although this program was initially conceived for undergraduate students, John is open to the idea of extending it to graduate students. For those of you that would be interested in such a course please let John know.
